RICA During my time at the Design Academy Eindhoven I had to fulfill a six-month internship. I was fortunate enough to be able to do this within Super Local at non-profit architecture firm MASS Design Group in Kigali, Rwanda. Super Local is a company that designs products, services and systems to improve the quality of life. They mainly focus on third world countries through the use of local productions and materials. We were asked to design the furniture, fixture and equipment for the project: Rwanda Institute of Conservation Agriculture, RICA. The goal was to have everything locally made with local materials. This meant working together with local companies and craftsman. I was introduced to traditional craftsmanship and techniques. We had to think within the limitations / possibilities Rwanda has to offer. This collection of 90 different objects was made from sustainably sourced materials by a network of over 85 craftsmen and co-ops. This internship gave me the best of both worlds. While working in the MASS office I learnt about budgeting, floorplans, light plans, time management, communication skills, CAD & render skills. And whilst working together with the local craftsmen I learnt new techniques, materials, furniture design, on-the-spot problem solving, thinking on my feet and patience. www.super-local.nl www.massdesigngroup.org
